WCSU to welcome new students, unveil mascot imagery on Friday

DANBURY, Connecticut — Western Connecticut State University will welcome more than 1,000 students to begin the fall 2022 semester on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, with the traditional “Entering the Gates” ceremony (weather permitting) and a first-time reveal of the visual representation of the university’s new mascot, the Wolves.

The students, two-thirds of whom are incoming freshmen, and one-third of whom have transferred in or are reentering WCSU, will proceed from the sidewalk at 181 White St. in Danbury through the iron gates to the Midtown campus. They will be the first class to be known as WCSU Wolves, after a multi-year discussion that included town halls and online balloting resulted in the April announcement that a new mascot identity for the university had been selected.

In addition to the traditional anticipation that the beginning of a new academic year and semester creates, this year’s ceremony promises to be even more exciting with the formal unveiling of the Western Connecticut State University Wolves imagery for the first time.

The “Entering the Gates” ceremony, at 1 p.m., will include the student procession, performances by the WCSU Pep Band, speeches by campus leaders and administrators … and more than a few teary-eyed parents as they watch their students embark on day one of their higher education journey.

Motorists in the area of the Midtown campus on White Street and the Westside campus on Lake Ave. Extension will experience heavier-than-usual vehicle and pedestrian traffic as parents and friends help students move into residence halls on both campuses on Friday and during the weekend.
