WCSU to hold Gallery Artist Talk, Sip & Sculpt, Ceramics Sale and more

DANBURY, Connecticut — Western Connecticut State University’s Department of Art will host several events open to the public, including a Gallery Artist Talk, Portfolio Review Day, Ceramics Sale and Sip & Sculpt evening.

As part of the art exhibit “Address Earth: Art Expo 2022” in the Gallery of WCSU’s Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC), artist and art historian Marcy B. Freedman will present a gallery talk, “Landscape in Art: From Delight to Alert,” on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, in Room 109 of the VPAC on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The gallery talk is from 6:30 – 8 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at Freedman will examine the role of the natural world in works of art dating from the Renaissance to the present.

On Portfolio Review Day on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022, prospective art students interested in pursuing and education in art and design can have their works reviewed by faculty from the university’s Department of Art from 1 – 4 p.m. in Room 145 of the VPAC. Participants are invited to register for one of nine individual 20-minute time slots and bring in selections of their artwork or a digital portfolio to meet with professional artists who teach at WCSU. Faculty members will critique portfolios to provide feedback and guidance on works presented and also will be available to discuss professional career opportunities in art and design, as well as concentrations for study in the WCSU Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts program. High school and college transfer students, and the general public, are invited to participate and while admission is free, a time slot must be reserved at The WCSU Department of Art is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

A Ceramics Sale featuring original works created by WCSU student-artists will be held from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, in the Ceramics Studio in White Hall Room 017, Midtown campus, 181 White Street, Danbury. The sale continues on Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11, from 2 – 6 p.m. in the VPAC lobby, 43 Lake Ave. Extension, Danbury, during the Holiday Pops concert.

Sip & Sculpt from 7 – 9  p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, allows participants of all skill levels to learn the techniques of sculpting artistic masks while enjoying music, wine and snacks. Experienced artist and WCSU M.F.A. alumnus Brian McCarley will share his skills and tips. The event takes place in the Sculpture Studio, Room 248 of the VPAC.  Admission is $35 and includes refreshments, clay and sculpting supplies, although participants may bring their own supplies. The event is open to adults 21 years and older. Tickets are limited and may be purchased online at The “Sip & Sculpt” event is sponsored by the WCSU Department of Art and Alumni Association.
