DANBURY, Connecticut — In a report released recently by the online site PraxisExam.org, Western Connecticut State University was noted as one of the top four Connecticut higher education institutions with a Praxis Elementary Education exam first-time pass rate higher than the state average.

Dr. Joan Palladino, dean of WestConn’s School of Professional Studies in which the Education Department is housed, responded to the report. “The Education Department curriculum prepares students for the Praxis,” she said. “The faculty work with students to ensure that they have the knowledge necessary for certification. WestConn has provided resources for students to ensure success. As Dean of the School of Professional Studies, I applaud the efforts of the faculty as they work with our students.”

According to the online article, “The Praxis exam is a standardized examination aspiring teachers take to obtain a license to teach. The examination is in different parts, including the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Tests, the Praxis Subject Tests, and the Praxis Elementary Education: Content Knowledge for Teaching (CKT) Assessment. The examination is widely accepted in most states to determine who among the candidates is qualified to teach in the classroom. Although many states use the examination, the Praxis score rate differs for every state. In the state of Connecticut, the average pass rate for this examination is 40%.”

WestConn is one of only eight schools whose Praxis scores exceeded the state average with a first attempt pass rate of 58%. WestConn joins Yale University (100%), Connecticut College (65%) and UConn (64%) at the top of the list, and is the best-performing Connecticut State Colleges and Universities institution. Rounding out the list are Fairfield University, ECSU, University of Bridgeport and University of Hartford, whose pass rates ranged between 40 – 49%.
