Greek celebration posterDANBURY, Connecticut — The tastes, sounds and art of Greece come to Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, for the Macricostas Greek Celebration. The special evening of Greek culture is free and open to the public and will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in WCSU’s Higgins Hall Lobby, Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Advance registration is required by Friday, March 24, at https://wcsutickets.regfox.com/macricostas-greek-celebration.

At this celebration, Macricostas School of Arts & Sciences Dean Michelle Brown will share how WCSU students have immersed themselves in Greek culture by studying its art, cinema and ancient artifacts. Participants will share these experiences by tasting Greek food and enjoying dancing and music provided by the Athenian Entertainment Greek Orchestra. The Greek Celebration is part of the Macricostas Experience  organized by the WCSU Macricostas School of Arts and Sciences and funded by the Macricostas Family Foundation.

Prior to the Macricostas Greek Celebration, the public is invited to attend a special Greek lecture, “Cinderella Goes to Class: Folktales as a Tool of Teaching Culture,” presented by Maria Kaliambou, a Senior Lector for the Hellenic Studies Program at Yale University. Focusing on the Greek version of Cinderella from the beginning of the 20th century, this lecture will highlight the striking differences of the Greek version as they pertain to Greek culture and society. The lecture will also examine how folktales offer an alternative approach to learn and teach a foreign language and its culture. This lecture begins at 4:30 p.m. in WCSU’s White Hall, Room 127, Midtown campus. Registration for the lecture only is not required.
